About the Position:
The Assistant Brewer will report directly to the Production Manager. He or she will be assist in all aspects of the brewery’s operations — including but not limited to brewhouse operations, cellaring activities, kegging, bottling, canning, taproom beer operations and all related activities. The Assistant Brewer is an integral part of our brand touchpoint team, meaning he/she will participate in brewery tours, festivals, sales promotions and other outside activities.

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have applicable brewery experience and a passion for the brewing industry. He or she will have a familiarity with the brewing process, packaging operations, cellaring operations, CIP operations and related activities. The ideal candidate will have a passion for solving problems and creating value for the company and its customers. This person will be available to assist with anything needed for brewery operations.

Job Purpose:
The Assistant Brewer’s primary responsibility will be to assist in all aspects of the brewery operations and take on whatever job the Production Manager assigns. This is a hands-on position — requiring the Assistant Brewer to undertake any job that is assigned…and yes, some of the jobs will require physical labor. You will need to be able to move 175 pounds repeatedly, carry heavy loads, be on your feet for extended periods of time and maintain a safe workplace.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Materials handling and management — forklift operations, warehouse operations, unloading/loading trucks, pulling grain bills, milling, spent materials handling, etc.
  • Assist in brewhouse operations — cleaning tanks, CIP operations, brewhouse cleaning and sanitation, grainout and disposal, etc.
  • Assist in cellaring operations — CO2/DO reading and recordings as directed, cellar equipment cleaning and sanitation as directed, waste disposal as directed, etc.
  • Assist in packaging operations — operate packaging department equipment, including kegging equipment, labeling equipment, bottling equipment, canning equipment and all associated machinery/supplies.
  • Assist in managing inventory control of kegs, bottles, cases, cans and associated materials/supplies.
  • Assist in yeast management procedures and best practices.
  • Responsible for all brewery recycling and disposal procedures.
  • Assist in dry spicing of fermented beer.
  • Load and unload trucks via forklift.
  • CIP equipment preparation and operations.
  • Assist in sales facilitation: occasionally pick and palletize beer for internal sales staff and distributor relationships.
  • Assist in on-site QA/QC standards: occasionally visiting customer sites, cleaning taps/lines, etc.
  • Provide and receive continual innovation and improvements.
  • Ensure serving tanks/kegs/bottles are sufficiently stocked for taproom.
  • Other duties include: Assist with effluent processing as it relates to the above operations, cleaning and organizing standards, assist with Daily Record of Activities, festival participation and management, brewery representation at events, Saturday tour participation.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of one year experience in the brewing industry is desired
  • Strong understanding of beer brewing and cellaring strategies is required
  • Laboratory skills are strongly desired: yeast management, DO/CO2 measurement, etc.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for beer
  • Strong work ethic. The ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • A college degree is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking capabilities, strong communication skills; verbal, listening and written

Some evening and weekend work is required.
