About the Position:
The Lead Brewer will report directly to the company president. He or she will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of brewing, cellaring and packaging operations — including but not limited to staff management, raw materials ordering and management, wort production, fermentation, cellaring activities, centrifuge operations, packaging management (keg and can), laboratory management, finished goods management and all beer QA/QC processes. The Lead Brewer is a primary member of our management team, meaning he/she will manage all brewing operations, brewing staff, and be responsible for all production operations.

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have applicable brewery operations experience and a passion for the brewing industry. He or she will have a strong background in brewery and packaging operations, cellaring, centrifuge management, yeast management, laboratory operations, QA/QC standards and assist in tax reporting processes. The ideal candidate will have a passion for solving problems and creating value for the company and its customers. This person will provide thought leadership, staff training and represent the company within the industry.

Job Purpose:
The Lead Brewer primary responsibility will be to lead the brewery’s production operations and constantly improve its production standards (from raw materials to customer’s glass). This is a hands-on position — requiring the Lead Brewer to personally participate in all brewery, cellaring and packaging operations!

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Raw materials ordering, inventory and management
  • Finished goods inventory and management — managing proper product and packaging mix
  • Brewhouse operations — run our unique 25 BBL brewhouse
  • Wort production — brew existing recipes and assist in new product development
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for all production processes
  • Manage all cellaring equipment, activities and staff
  • Manage daily gravity readings and recordings
  • Manage daily CO2/DO reading and recordings as necessary to ensure product quality
  • Maintain turbidity, CO2 and O2 levels within product specifications
  • Operate and maintain packaging department equipment, including kegging equipment, canning equipment and all associated machinery/supplies
  • Develop and maintain best practices for all brewing, cellaring and packaging procedures
  • Assist in managing inventory control of kegs, cans and associated materials/supplies
  • Manage yeast harvesting and husbandry procedures and best practices
  • Manage yeast disposal procedures
  • Manage dry spicing of fermented beer
  • Lead and manage all cellaring operations and best practices
  • Startup and shutdown of facility processes
  • Manage CIP equipment preparation and operations.
  • Assist in sales facilitation: occasionally pick and palletize beer for internal sales staff and distributor relationships.
  • Provide and receive continual innovation and improvements.
  • Other duties include: Manage effluent processing as it relates to the above operations, cleaning and organizing standards, assist with Daily Record of Activities, festival participation, brewery representation at events, some Saturday tour participation.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of five years experience in the brewing/packaging industry is required
  • Strong understanding of beer brewing and cellaring strategies is required
  • Laboratory skills are required: yeast management, DO/CO2 measurement, etc.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for beer
  • Strong work ethic. The ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • A college degree is preferred
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking capabilities, strong communication skills; verbal, listening and written
